ABOUT US

Beginnings

Under the direction of Miss Gladys Riseley MBE, the Concert Party of Kettering Operatic Society (KOS) entertained at Residential homes, Church Festivals and Fundraising Events all over the county and beyond for as long as there has been a KOS (since 1947). We have always tried to take music to the community and KOS Annual productions were then the source of almost all programme material, and a rich source indeed.

Three of our members were chosen to appear in the Pro-Am production of Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Follies’ which marked the re-opening of Northampton’s Royal Theatre, Derngate in 2001. Maureen Chapman (then Barwick), Margaret Walker, and Joan Carnell were picked from a host of hopefuls auditioning from musical theatre companies across the county

Times Change

We then became a stand alone choir and gave ourselves a New Name, adopting the title Sound Sensation. We continue to incorporate many different forms of music, as diverse as current West End Productions to Spirituals and contemporary 'Pop' pieces into our programmes. Our extensive repertoire keeps us in demand for events all across Northamptonshire from fundraisers concerts to Weddings and Funerals. We definitely have Songs for ALL occasions.

In 2011 we were the winners of a nationwide search to become the official Brewers Fayre Christmas Carol Stars of 2011. Sound Sensation was chosen from entrants all across the UK. Emma Price, a spokeswoman for Brewers Fayre said; “Music is such a special part of our British Christmas traditions and we want to ensure that all our guests feel the magic of Christmas this yuletide. We welcomed entries for the 2011 ‘Carol Factor’ from all around the UK but Sound Sensation stood out to us as a group that clearly have a real passion for singing and embody the true spirit of Christmas”.

In 2023 and 2024 we took on another new challenge and entered the North Northants Music Festival A very different experience for us! Nerve-wracking but rewarding as on both occasions we came away with some very complimentary comments from the adjudicators and some silverware to boot! We must be doing something right.

We can provide a full choir or a small group for Concerts, Wedding, Funerals etc and hope that we can continue to bring joy through music to many, many people in the Northamptonshire area. There are some past programmes on our Downloads page

If you would like to join us we meet at 7:30pm on a Wednesday night at the Poppies Community Centre in Britannia Road, NN16 9RZ . Please feel free to come along and see what we do. You can also take a look at our Events Diary page and look us up on Facebook for our upcoming events.
